May I get the accommodations?

Generally the accommodations that are administered by the Akademisches Förderungswerk (AKAFÖ) are rented for the students whose high schools belong to the responsibility of "Studentenwerk". Such high schools are:

Students from high schools of the surroundings, who are interested to get an accommodation, administered by Akademisches Förderungswerk, may apply, if there are places available.

What conditions should I fulfil?

The preference is given to the students in their first occupation qualifying study. The students of the additional studies or of the second studies will get an accommodation, if there are places available, and if it is initial application. Then a rent agreement will be concluded for the studies time. If corresponding studies follow directly the basic studies, and the student has the valid rent agreement, see "How long may I live in the accommodations of the Akademisches Förderungswerk"?
The rooms are let to students, whose age should not be more than 40 years while signing the agreement. Moreover, the students should have studied at the high school for not more than 19 semesters.

Where and when can I apply?

You can apply at the Akademisches Förderungswerk:

You can apply at any time. The applications are possible during the whole year and can be made even if you are not yet matriculated at the high school.

What are the main criteria for the room allocation?

The accommodations are allocated according to the date the applications have arrived to the Akademisches Förderungswerkes. For rooms in "Wohngemeinschaften" (accommodations for 2-4 persons, sharing a flat), you may be interviewed by the administrators to find out, if you are the suitable person for them. The students of a "Wohngemeinschaft" have the right to participate in this selection.

How long should I wait for the accommodations or when should I apply to get a room in time?

The waiting time depends on the dormitory you want to live in and may lie within a year. So, if you are interested to get an accommodation, apply as soon as possible. .

How long may I live in the accommodations of the Akademisches Förderungswerk?

Each accommodation is generally rented for the max. period of 10 semesters. After this, you can prolong your agreement for 2 semesters, if there are very special (personal or university) reasons. Then, if there is still an acute necessity, you may be allowed by the AKAFÖ to live in the dormitory for a max. of 2 more semesters. After this time the tenancy termination will be asked and in the crucial situations even the juridical methods can be used.

When should a student identity card be produced?

The student matriculation certificate has to be presented when signing a rent agreement and also during the study time, before 30.11. once a year.

May I change accommodation within the houses of AKAFÖ?

You may change only one time during your leasing period. For this, you have to make a removal application, which may only be done, when the applicant already has a valid contract. Removals will be considered after a waiting period of at least 6 months. The leasing period up to now will be counted towards the new contract. For further information please contact the corresponding employee in AKAFÖ.

Is there any possibility to get accommodation in the Akademischen Förderungswerk, if I am not a student?

If available, the accommodations are allocated to doctorates, doctors during their practice year and so on. In such cases the tenancy time is max. 4 semesters. Generally there is no allocation for the people, who attend some lectures at the high schools of Akademisches Förderungswerk, but are matriculated in other schools ("Zweithörer").

What are the main criteria for the people, who look for an accommodation for couples?

The accommodations are allocated to the couple (married or not), if one of the partners is a student of the high school in Bochum, the Akademisches Förderungswerk is responsible for. When this partner moves from these accommodations, the tenancy is terminated
