Fast and uncomplicated internet connection in the AKAFÖ student hostels.
It has already been indicated in the small print of your rental agreement: The network access is part your property. Take a close look, and you will discover a separate data socket on the room wall. This socket is your connection point to a high-speed Ethernet-based network. This is a fiber-optic network provided by the company Glasfaser Bochum GmbH &Co. KG. The data transfer is effected much faster than with a common DSL connection.
The user ID is for example „user name@domain name“. The domain name shall hereby be replaced by the domain name of either an external research institution or a University. „user name@domain name“ often corresponds to the email address of the respective external University of the research institution. The password is identical with the respective password at the home University. For questions on an external user name or a password, you are kindly asked to contact your home University exclusively. We are not able to assist you in this issue.
With your user details, you can also register at the lock-and-key website (see above) and use the internet access.
Your network access point is connected to the university computer network (HIRN) via the HIRN port. As a user, you must sign in with your network access authorisation in order to get Internet access and to access the university network. (The service centre is located in the north-western flat area of building NA, room NA 02/297.

Should you have no login ID of Ruhr-Universität Bochum, you can use the personal eduroam user ID of the university, college or other research facility if it participates in eduroam (https://www.eduroam.org).
The user ID then reads for instance “username@domainname” (e.g. email@example.com). The address domainname is to be replaced by the domain name of the external research facility or university. Often “username@ domainname” is equivalent to the E-Mail address of the respective external university or research facility. The password corresponds to the password at the home university. For queries regarding the external user ID or the password, please revert solely to the home university. We cannot help you here.
With the user data you can also log in to the Lock-and-Key website (see below) and use the Internet access.

First switch on the PC. Then carry out the following steps.
Should your Internet connection be blocked, the reason is normally that your PC causes trouble in the network. In this case, Glasfaser Bochum GmbH & Co. KG is entitled to immediately abort your network connection. In most cases, the underlying cause for that is a blocking due to malfunctioning of the Windows operating system, the manual entering of IP addresses on your computer (not the IP of Glasfaser Bochum’s server) or the operation of an incorrectly connected WLAN router with an activated DHCP server.
Please note that Glasfaser Bochum GmbH & Co KG may call for a re-connection fee of up to 50 EUR in case of repeated blockings of your network connection.

Mon to Fri from 8 to 18 hrs.
During the non-office hours Mon to Fri from 18 to 8 hrs, Sat, Sun, bank holidays, 0 to 24 hrs, you can report malfunctions by E-Mail to firstname.lastname@example.org or to the answerphone installed for that purpose, mentioning your tenant number (written in the tenancy agreement).
Furthermore, you can find help on Mondays and Thursdays between 8 and 9 p.m. at the office of Haus Michael auf Draht e.V. (Laerholzstr. 3, 44801 Bochum). Please bring all your networking devices (router, laptop, …).
